Pompeii Tickets in 2026: Prices, Grades and Where to Buy

Everything the park sells, with what each one actually opens. Prices are the park's own, effective from 12 January 2026 and checked again in August 2026.

Read the table from the bottom up if you are under 25 and hold an EU passport: the difference between €2 and €25 is larger than the difference between the two grades, and it is checked at the gate, so carry the document rather than a photograph of it. Under-18s enter free on the same basis.

Both day tickets get you through the same gates into the same city. The Forum, the Stabian Baths, the bakeries, the thermopolia, the Lupanare, the amphitheatre: all of that is inside the €20 ticket.

What the €20 ticket does not open is the route through the Herculaneum Gate to the suburban villas outside the walls, and that is where the Villa of the Mysteries is. The villa holds the near-complete cycle of large red-ground frescoes that appears on the cover of most books about Pompeii, and it is about fifteen minutes' walk beyond where guided tours turn round.

So the honest test is a single question. Is the frescoed villa part of what you came for? If yes, the extra five euros is not optional. If your picture of Pompeii is streets, casts and the Forum with Vesuvius behind it, the express ticket buys exactly that and nothing is missing from your day.

What the second ticket is not

It is not a queue jump. Neither grade is a priority ticket, and both hold a booked time slot. Tour groups enter through a separate gate, which is what tour listings mean by skip the line, and that has nothing to do with which grade of ticket is in the guide's hand.

It is also not a longer visit. Both are single entry with no exit and re-entry, so leaving for lunch in the modern town ends your day at the site whichever ticket you hold.

If you arrive holding an express ticket and change your mind, the park sells a way out. The suburban-villas route can be added on the day for €8, card payment only, bought at the start of the route at the Herculaneum Gate on the Street of the Tombs.

Three things to know before relying on it. It cannot be bought on its own, only as a supplement to a valid express ticket. There is no cash option at that desk, which catches people out. And the villas route closes at the same time as the last general admission, 17:30 in summer and 15:30 in winter, so a late-afternoon decision in November is not a decision at all.

In money terms: €20 plus €8 is €28, against €25 for Pompeii+ bought upfront. Deciding at the gate costs three euros more than deciding at home.

Who pays less

The €2 reduced rate applies to EU citizens aged 18 to 24, and to holders of an Italian residence permit issued for the reasons listed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under-18s are free. Both are checked at the gate against a document, not a claim.

The free first Sunday

Entry to Pompeii is free on the first Sunday of every month, with direct access rather than a booked slot. That is genuinely free and it is genuinely the busiest day of the month, which is the trade-off nobody mentions. If your trip only overlaps one Sunday and you dislike crowds, pay the twenty euros and go on the Tuesday instead. More on when the site is quiet.

What else your ticket opens

A valid Pompeii ticket admits you free, within thirty days of issue, to the National Archaeological Museum of Volcei at Buccino, the Castle of Lettere, the Archaeological Nature Park of Longola at Poggiomarino and the Territorial Archaeological Museum of Terzigno. None of them appears on a tour itinerary and all of them are quiet.

The park also sells thematic itineraries, Civic Pompeii and Daily Pompeii, each about an hour and a half, at €8 on top of the entrance ticket and free for children under 10.

Official online sale runs through vivaticket, linked from the park's own site at pompeiisites.org. That is the ticket office, it carries no markup, and we link it as a plain link because nobody should be earning a commission on a state museum ticket, including us.

Resellers do exist and some of them rank above the park in search results. They are not scams, but they add a service fee to a ticket the park sells directly, and several still advertise the pre-2026 price structure. Check the grade you are being sold before the price.

Buy in advance for a specific reason rather than out of habit: tickets are personal, the park caps the site at 20,000 a day, and the slot quotas below mean the grade you want can sell out while the other is still available.

Since the middle of November, tickets carry the holder's name and the park admits a maximum of 20,000 visitors a day. Between 16 March and 14 October that allowance is split across two windows, and the split is where the ticket grades collide.

Three quarters of the day's capacity sits in the morning, but only a fifth of the morning capacity carries the villas. So if the Villa of the Mysteries is your reason for coming, the thing that sells out is not Pompeii, it is the morning Pompeii+ quota.

The afternoon ratio is four times better: 2,000 Pompeii+ places out of 5,000. In summer that also means walking uncovered basalt streets at the hottest hour, which is a real cost rather than a footnote. The timing trade-off in full.

If you book a guided tour, the ticket comes with it, and most listings will not tell you which grade. We read the inclusion text of every tour compared on this site in August 2026: four name the ticket in writing and all four name the €20 express grade, one includes the ticket only on certain options, one is transport with no ticket at all, and the rest say only skip-the-line entry ticket.

That is not sharp practice so much as an accurate reflection of where tours go. No guided half day from Naples walks out to the Herculaneum Gate, so the villas would be wasted on the itinerary anyway. It matters when you planned to stay on afterwards, and it matters if you assumed the premium price bought the premium ticket.

The rule is short enough to carry in your head: twenty euros is the city, twenty-five is the city and the villa, and eight more at the gate is the expensive way to change your mind. Everything else, the slots, the cap, the reductions, follows from choosing that first.
